The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA), or International Motor Show Germany, in Frankfurt will officially be moved to Munich, beginning in September 2021, organizers announced early March.

The city was selected by the VDA German automakers association from a shortlist that included Berlin and Hamburg for its attractive downtown host venues, Automotive News quotes VDA president Hildegard Mueller, and will see the first iteration of the event focused on mobility instead of cars.

The biannual exposition has been hosted in Frankfurt for nearly 70 years, but the end of the VDA’s contract with the Frankfurt trade fair company opened up the opportunity for drastic changes.

The organization decided to go ahead with those changes after declining interest from show attendees and presenting automakers at the 2019 event saw many manufacturers, including Ferrari, skip out; and environmentalist activist protests at the show steal the headlines instead.
